Another Child, Another Set of Mentors

Another Child, Another Set of Mentors

This June marked the 13th birthday of my daughter Petra. And, with her birthday came the year long task of finding godly women for her to meet with. From my perspective, it’s amazing to think that seven years have passed so quickly since I began this program for my children. Since these, we’ve been able to share the story with many other families whether in church settings or national conferences. When I was thinking of Petra’s … Read entire article »

How To Be Cool

Cool is probably the second most over-used term in a teenager’s vocabulary these days (see my article on “swag” for #1). I personally am not an expert on the subject, but I have made some observations regarding coolness in general, especially how to be what is perceived as “cool.” One problem high schoolers have when trying to be cool is they don’t realize that people of differing morality and maturity think different characteristics are cool. It is the thing to say when you don’t know what to say (Mary Poppins does, after all, have a large amount of swag herself). Swag is all around us, and teenagers are absolutely obsessed with it these days. But the question is, why is it such a big deal? And … Read entire article »

Almost everyone has an automobile. I recently turned sixteen, and I now have the ability to drive a vehicle by myself. There are countless types of transportation, and it’s amazing how many human traits and personalities you can see in the automobile realm. You see, every person has, by default, a personality. Likewise, every car has certain distinguishable traits (I suppose you would call it a carality?). Now, I do have certain likes and dislikes in automobiles that you may not agree with, but for most of these comparisons, I think you will be able to spot the similarities. For starters, let’s look at the minivan. It’s hardworking, but not too flashy, and it’s probably light-colored. There are usually some juice or food stains on the upholstery, left there by the … Read entire article »

Not One Member, But Many

Not One Member, But Many

This has been my first year playing basketball, and as a result, it is also the first year that I’ve really been watching the NBA. And in case you’re not familiar with the NBA headlines this year, one of the biggest is the Los Angeles Lakers. To put it bluntly, they stink. Oh, they’re only six games under .500, which is okay. However, there are 17 teams with better records than them, and they just … Read entire article »
