When Saying “No” Is Not Enough

No.  It’s one of the most powerful words in the English language.  Within that word lies the answer to overcome temptation.  It is the word which can prevent broken hearts and lives.  It is the word of resolve uttered by statesmen when tyranny demands acquiescence to threats. It also happens to be one of the most frustrating words when you encounter it personally.  Ever had your hopes and dreams built up, only to be told, “No”?  Have you invested in a relationship deeply only to be told, “No”?  From childhood onward, our lives are filled with a seemingly endless flood of the word “no.” What does that have to do with parenting?  A simplistic response would be to say that this is an article about learning to tell your child, “No” and … Read entire article »

Dad’s Reflections on 52 Godly Men

Dad’s Reflections on 52 Godly Men

A full year came and went, just like that. When I started the 52 Godly Men project with my son, all I could see was a big long list of names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and calendar slots. Without doubt, it was a lot of work getting a full year scheduled for David. Now that it’s over, I’ve had some time to think and reflect on what this year meant for all … Read entire article »

What Other Families Do For Fun

Yesterday we were invited for a dinner appointment and then asked to attend a church service at a local fellowship here in town.  The special Saturday night service featured the Wissmann Family from Nebraska.  Having never seen nor heard them, our family was delighted to sit and listen to close to two hours of gospel music — bluegrass style — played by many of the members of this homeschooled family of 13 children.  (Wow! right?) Each family member with them was involved at some point in the evening, all the way down to the youngest daughter who belted out “God Bless America.”  It was neat to see another family using their talents to glorify God, have fun and bless others at the same time.  The world needs more good examples, right? We … Read entire article »

How You Can Be a Part of 52 Godly Men

How You Can Be a Part of 52 Godly Men

It’s hard to believe that 48 weeks have already passed.  Yet, in another month, David’s journey with 52 godly men will be history, and we will move on to the next phase of his life.  As a Father, I’d like to ask you as a parent, “What are you doing for your child’s spiritual growth and development?”  Do you have a plan?  If not, why not become part of the 52 Godly Men (and Women) … Read entire article »

Sometimes Parents Get Tired

Sometimes Parents Get Tired

Tonight I’m tired. After a winter storm system passed through the Southeast last evening and night, God graciously answered a prayer to let the freezing rain turn into regular rain to wash away the ice. I awoke this morning to a set of clear roads in our area. After a good breakfast, David and I left for Atlanta to meet with godly man #45, Nathan Ridgeway. We planned to make the … Read entire article »
