Little Things

A couple of weeks ago, I was able to see “The Hobbit” in theaters. As an avid Middle Earth fan, I had been looking forward to its release for a few years. It was a very well made movie, and I am extremely glad I got to go see it. However, it struck me that the majority of the main cast were extremely short in stature. Take Bilbo, for instance. Only about three feet high, … Read entire article »
Brazil, Monday-Wednesday
Not much has happened since we got back from the school, but I have experienced some new things this week. So, here’s an update on the work that’s been done so far. Monday saw Dad and Mr. Tom working on the E1 line for the phone system. That is the medium over which the phone company provides the telephone service for us to plug into. It’s very important, so it was necessary to establish a connection early this week. It went pretty smoothly, except for the fact that the configuration was different for Brazil, and that threw a monkey wrench into things and made it take longer. The guys finished it Monday night, and we went to a nearby restaurant to celebrate. We ordered dessert and French fries; just the … Read entire article »

Brazil: Thursday & Friday
Well, it’s been a week since we first showed up here in Manaus. Since then, I have experienced a flurry of sounds, sights, smells, and (of course) tastes. I almost wish I could stay here forever, and not have to return to the life I once had. However, it’s never good to dwell in the past, so here’s what happened on Thursday and Friday. We woke up later than usual because of another late-night work day. In case you’re wondering why we kept staying up, here’s the reason. The people here at the mission house work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The work that my dad, SeƱor Phil, and Mr. Tom are doing sometimes requires them to shut off the phones while they are working. So, from noon to five … Read entire article »

Brazil, Day Four

Ah, Sunday, the day of rest. Much needed rest. I got too much rest. Translation: I slept in. My alarm was supposed to go off an hour earlier, but he and I were not on the same page this morning. We made it to church on time, though, and I didn’t really need to eat breakfast anyway. Let me just say, the service was beautiful. We sang basic church songs; nothing fancy, just simple, pure … Read entire article »

Brazil, Day Three

Have you ever dreamed of fishing in the Amazon? Pictured the pink dolphins, anacondas, and seen piranha leaping out of the water every few seconds? Can you imagine the fifty-pound bass hanging off the end of your line? The Brazilian fish weighing down your boat? Well, if you have, let me bring you back to reality. It’s not like that,at least not for me. I found that out this morning, when I woke up at … Read entire article »

Brazil, Day Two

Day one of my time here in Brazil was mostly occupied with going through security and traveling. Today, I was able to do and see more than that. My day started as I ate breakfast late in the morning, unpacked, met lots of people, and generally got settled. I was also able to help dad and his computer friend with setting up the network. They had gotten the server configured last night, but they needed … Read entire article »
