Week 20: From AC to JC

What do Radioshack, IT, and a Baptist church have in common? And no, the answer is not that they all have an “i” in their name. Well, for anyone who can’t guess, the common thread is the man I met with today– Richard Snyder, a former Radio Shack salesman and current pastor and IT manager. After greeting dad, Richard started the day by telling me his story. Richard’s father left when he was a young child, … Read entire article »

Week 19: Serving God, Serving Your Country

Week 19: Serving God, Serving Your Country

I have found that a lot of people, mostly kids, have a distorted view of war. Some kids hear all their lives “do not kill” and grow up hating war, thinking that it falls under that commandment. AAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGHHH! That’s the sound of a thirteen-year-old boy jumping off a 25 foot cliff into the murky, deep waters of the Hiwassee river. It’s also the sound of gray hair in the making. In case you haven’t guessed, that boy was me, and it was describing my day with Michael Graham Glasgow, alias Mike, alias Mr. Mike, alias Big Mike, alias Mikey G, alias…well, you get the point. Starting the day, I had no clue what … Read entire article »

Week 17: The Heart of Worship

Week 17: The Heart of Worship

Worship. What is it? Some say it is entertaining others. Some say it is bringing people into God’s presence with music. Some may even call it a time to show off. But for Bob Bevan, the man I met with, worship is only one thing; using his musical talents to talk to and glorify the Creator. For those of you (and probably all of you) who don’t know him, Mr. Bob is the music leader and youth … Read entire article »

Week 16: Dave Whitaker, Mechanic Extraordinaire

Week 16: Dave Whitaker, Mechanic Extraordinaire

Up until today, I had no idea of the difference between a MGA and a MGB. I didn’t know how to tell apart a ladder frame and a uniframe. I couldn’t even tell a supercharger from a turbocharger. But today, all of that changed, because I met with Dave Whitaker: an enormous car enthusiast (car was his first word) and a firm believer that Formula-1 is entirely better than NASCAR.                       … Read entire article »
