Preparing for the Hunt and the Value of Freedom

Many of the appointments within this project have been one day affairs.  I drive my son to meet with the man, they spend time together, and I pick my son up again.  The hunt was a bit more involved. My brother-in-law, who graciously agreed to take David hunting, gave me a good overview of what would be required several months in advance.  This allowed ample time to mentally and physically prepare for the Junior Hunt weekend. The biggest commitment on David’s part was to work through the online hunting course.  We chose this route rather than the classroom format due to scheduling, travel and time logistics and sheer convenience.  Still, with multiple family members being involved in sports, music, art and church activities, it was still daunting enough.  My job involved staying … Read entire article »

Week 37: The Defense Rests (and takes a coffee break)

Week 37: The Defense Rests (and takes a coffee break)

How many lawyer jokes are out there? That’s probably like asking, “Which came first; the chicken or the egg?” or “If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?” My point is, pretty much everyone makes fun of lawyers in some way. However, I learned today that not all lawyers are stereotypical of the jokes. In fact, the majority of the attorneys here in Cleveland and Bradley County are actually very competent … Read entire article »

Week 36: Mission Possible

Week 36: Mission Possible

The names of famous missionaries hold respect and awe like almost no other kind of name. People like David Livingstone, Gladys Aylward, Hudson Taylor, Corrie Ten Boom, Brother Andrew, Amy Carmichael, George Muller, Elizabeth Elliot, Cameron Townsend, and Mary Slessor. I didn’t exactly hang … Read entire article »

Week 35: The Fear of God is the Beginning of Wisdom

Week 35: The Fear of God is the Beginning of Wisdom

Well, in the thirty plus weeks that I have spent meeting with different men, I haven’t had a day quite like the one I experienced with Cleston Walton today. For starters, he is bipolar, which means he has drastic mood swings (I’ll explain more later). Also, he loves to analyze and study everything, so he’s pretty much a genius. Thirdly, he has some amazing views on life, relationships, and religion that I had never heard … Read entire article »

Week 34: Charles, A Bike Shop, And Thou

Week 34: Charles, A Bike Shop, And Thou

When certain people are surrounded by certain things, whether it be people, a closet, or even animals, they get really claustrophobic. Today, I was surrounded with bicycles all day, and some would have experienced severe claustrophobia. But I didn’t. Instead, I enjoyed myself immensely, while learning a ton about running a bicycle shop and spending some time with Charles Nelson, owner of Trailhead Bicycle Company here in Cleveland, and as big a lover of two-wheeled … Read entire article »

Week 33: Shining The Light

Week 33: Shining The Light

How many of you readers out there have ever listened to a song played on the radio? Probably every single one of you have. In fact, statistics show that the average teen listens to five hours of music each day, and a big part of that is from the radio. That’s how groups like tobyMac, Third Day, Switchfoot, Hawk Nelson, and a million other groups get popular. However, did you ever wonder how radio stations … Read entire article »
